Inspiration for Characters

Sisters.  They know us better than anyone else on earth.  They know our strengths, our weaknesses and our most embarrassing moments.  They celebrate the good times and eat ice-cream and vodka sundaes with you during the bad times.  And no matter what, they have your back.

Most of my female characters have traits that trace back to my sister, Debbie.  If my heroine is kind beyond measure and would give someone the blue Crush t-shirt off her body, it’d be Debbie.  If my heroine is more than willing to chase two grown men in a beat up van through town to give them a piece of her mind because they cut her off at a stop light, it’d be Deb.  Pay no mind to the fact that she’s five feet tall and weighs about a hundred pounds.  The irish temper makes up for it.

If my character has the rare ability to cut through the crap and see the real picture, well…that’s my sister too.  She’s a complex woman who gives me much to write about.  And she’s one of the kindest, most loyal, and fun fireballs on the planet.

So, I’d like to say HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my sister Debbie.  I love you, Deb.  And thanks for the inspiration.  🙂

It’s good to see siblings that inspire each other. I get a lot of material for my characters from my brother.

Awe…that post is so sweet, it makes me wish I had a sister. You’re a lucky girl! :o)

If I were to somehow gain inspiration for a character from my only brother, I’d have a hero who was a flaky mush, who didn’t know how to be alone — or be a responsible adult. Hmmmmmm, somehow I don’t think that’d sell many books…lol.

    Great post!

    1. Okay – that’s funny. I know we’ll see a character of yours with those attributes now–maybe not the good guy, but…
