Author Katie Reus talks about Choices…with GIVEAWAYS!

on January 6, 2012

UPDATE:  Katie used Random.org to draw winners, and here they are:  Bonnie Paulson (His Secret Past) and Barb P (Alpha Instinct).  Congrats!

I asked my friend and fellow Darker Temptations blogger to drop by and talk about her new releases today.  Katie Reus writes sexy romantic suspense and paranormal romance. Currently she writes for Carina Press, Harlequin Nocturne, and in early 2012 the first book in her paranormal series will release from NAL/Signet Eclipse.  Being amazing and so generous, Katie has offered to give away copies of her books to commenters here!  (See below).  So…..here’s Katie!

Thank you so much Rebecca for having me here today!

Romantic suspense and paranormal romance are two of my favorite genres. This month and next, I have a release in both. I grew up reading contemporary romance but once I discovered romantic suspense I was officially hooked and devoured everything I could find. There’s just something exciting about running from bad guys, dodging bullets and hunting a serial killer while trying to stay alive. Add in paranormal elements and I’m in freaking heaven. Of course this is only exciting in fiction. I wouldn’t want to deal with what most of my heroines do.

In His Secret Past, my recent release from Carina Press, my heroine has to make a decision that wars with what her heart wants but she makes a tough choice for the sake of her child. And in Alpha Instinct, my upcoming release from Signet Eclipse, my heroine also has to make a decision she doesn’t want to for the sake of her pack/family. The choices they make change their lives in a big way.

Years ago I made a decision that changed my life. At the time I didn’t know it but this choice changed everything in the best way. After switching majors and colleges I was floundering and unsure what career direction I wanted to take or even where I wanted to go to school. For someone who’d once had every detail of college and life planned out, this was a scary thing. Instead of wasting time taking classes I might not even need, I decided to take a break. To make a long story short, my sister lived in another state (for school) and thought it would be a good idea if moved up to live with her so I took the plunge. Not long after settling in, I met my now husband. It’s possible we would have met later, but considering his military career at the time I don’t know how or where. Almost immediately after we met we were engaged and then not long after that, he was sent overseas for five months so for over half our engagement we were separated. And through the first part of our marriage he traveled about half of it and since I had no plans to travel to war zones, I honestly don’t know that we would have ever connected.

Sometimes I wonder how different my life would be if I hadn’t made that choice to move but the truth is, I don’t want to even imagine. When writing books, I love to ask the what-if question of my characters. Sometimes even innocuous decisions can change the course of our lives and the consequences can be good or bad. And more often than not, we don’t realize the effects until later.

Have you ever made a decision that changed your life but you didn’t actually realize the change until later? Or did you make one you knew would change things, but the end result still surprised you? Leave a comment about today’s blog and be entered to win a digital copy of His Secret Past and a print copy of Alpha Instinct (US only for Alpha). Head over to Books-N-Kisses

on December 30, 2011

Hey all!  I’m engrossed in finishing book 4 right now and haven’t had much time to blog.  But, head on over to Books-N-Kisses for a pretty fun interview…as well as a chance to win an e-copy of Tempted.  See you there!  🙂

Author Lynn Rush is on the Hot Seat…

on September 7, 2011

UPDATE:  Random.org chose Amy Lynn Michael as the winner!  Congrats!  🙂

I’d like to introduce my friend, Lynn Rush.  Lynn is the author of WASTELAND, a truly awesome paranormal romance that you just have to read!  She began her writing career in 2008. She has both an undergraduate and graduate degree in the mental health field and has enjoyed applying that unique knowledge to developing unique characters.

A former inline speed skater and mountain biker, Lynn has been known to test the limits of her athletic endurance. So, when she’s not writing, she spends time enjoying the Arizona sunshine by road biking nearly 100 miles per week with her husband of fourteen years and going on jogs with her loveable Shetland Sheep dogs.

So…here are my questions for Lynn:

  1. What inspired WASTELAND?  How and why did you decided to write this particular story?

I wrote it in December 2009 in my fourth month of unemployment. I poured my heart into writing during that time and this was a product of that. The emotions. The frustration of having to deal with something beyond my control. Something I hadn’t asked for and didn’t want.

I’m known to just sit down and start writing, and that’s what I did with this, too. But looking back, I can see the connection to what was happening in my life at the time.

 2.  I’ve read WASTELAND and I have to say…I loved the emotion in it.  Well, I also loved the hero.  Tell us one thing about your hero that no one else knows.

**glances around, then leans in**  He secretly watches re-runs of iCarly.

Jeez, I sure hope he doesn’t read this interview, otherwise I might get an up close and personal view of his claws. But seriously, on the flight from New York to Arizona, they crammed pop culture stuff down his throat since he’d been in sensory deprivation for so long. One of the things he saw was the iCarly show. Spencer made David laugh, which is actually pretty difficult to do, considering he’s a tad twitchy from imprisonment and the fact that he’s a half-demon….

3. Being a half-demon…well…the guy is hot.  WASTELAND is labeled as ‘new adult.’  What exactly is ‘new adult’ and how does it differ from both young adult and, well, adult?

I get asked this a lot. It’s fairly new on the scene. Some have talked about “Upper Young Adult,” which is pretty close to what is meant by New Adult.

My publisher described it very well with this description: Young adult stories are just as complex as any mainstream novel, however you’ll find the romantic element is handled more gently in comparison. Also, the characters are generally in Middle School or High School. A New Adult novel takes the story to the next level romantically. The characters are usually out of school and confronted with life challenges.

4. I loved how your characters dealt with their life challenges.  Speaking of life…what’s next for you?

Wasteland II (which I’m tentatively calling AWAITED) is off to my crit partners to be hacked up. And while they’re doing that, I’m working on the edits for VIOLET MIDNIGHT. It’s book one in the Violet Night Trilogy, which Crescent Moon Press will publish.

5. So while you’re editing and writing…you’re also promoting.  You’re known as a bit of a social media guru.  Did you set out to be one?  If not, how did it happen?

I am? I really love social media but I’ve never thought myself a guru. I’ve met tons of great people, that’s for sure, and I love interacting with them. I’m a pretty positive and optimistic person, so I think that plays into the Tribe that’s developed. Or, they just want to read about me torturing myself on 70-mile bike rides. 🙂 No. Seriously…I really just want to be a positive and encouraging space on the net. There’s enough junk out there to bring a person down, right?

6. So true!  And I think one of the reasons you’re so successful socially is that it seems like you truly like people.  You really enjoy the interaction.  If you could be anyone else in history (you have to choose someone), alive or dead, who would it be and why?

There are quite a few people to choose from, but I’d have to say Esther. At church we had this series about Heroes. It was wicked-awesome, but when I heard Esther’s story, I was hooked. A mere mortal, unlike the characters I write about, Esther risked her life to save those she cared about. Brave enough to face death.

I’d love to have a fraction of her strength and courage.  🙂

7. I’m pretty sure you do.  🙂  Thanks so much for agreeing to an interview on my blog.  Is there anything you’d like to add?

First, I’d like to say thank you for having me on your blog and being a part of the tour. This has been super fun. And I can’t thank you enough for your support!

Hey, readers–I’m curious, how would you guys answer #6? I’ll give away a signed copy of Wasteland to a commenter. If you’re not a US resident, that’s okay, I can send you an electronic version. I’ll pick someone tomorrow and contact the winner–Rebecca can send me the winner’s email.  Have fun with this!

Isn’t she great?  A couple more places to find Lynn and WASTELAND on the web:

I’m Heading to the RT Convention…

on April 1, 2011

So, this is the same post I put up on the Brava blog today.  I don’t usually duplicate posts, but wanted to make sure that if you’re at RT, you stop and say hi!

I’m thinking about packing for the RT convention next week in Los Angeles.  This will be my first RT, so I’m not quite sure what to expect.  I think it may be a bit different than the RWA convention considering there will be fairy balls, mystery hunts and so on.  This convention is geared toward readers as much as authors.  Should be a lot of fun.

I love conferences and this one will also have many workshops.  Workshops are my favorite…

So, are you going to be in LA next week?  If so, come by.  There’s a book fair on Saturday (April 9th) where more than 300 authors (including a bunch of us Brava authors) will be signing books and giving away prizes.  Some of the hottest cover models in the industry as well as those studs competing for the Mr. Romance competition will be wandering around.

Also, if you’re attending the conference, I’m manning a table in CLUB RT on Thursday (April 7th) at 10:00 am.  Please come by and say hi.  I’ll have chocolate.  You can also win a bag of free books!  I hope to see some of you there.  Kensington will also have a publisher’s spotlight the same day from 1:30 to 2:30, and a morning mixer Friday morning from 8:30 to 9:45.  Goodies and talk!

For more information about the RT Convention, click on the links above.  Have a wonderful weekend!

Interview and Giveaway with Danica Avet!

on March 7, 2011

UPDATE:  Congratulations to Yadira and Brans for winning the beautiful masks!!!

Today I was fortunate enough to interview my friend, Danica Avet, who I met in Orlando last year.  Danica is a spunky sweetheart…as you’ll see.  She born and raised in the wilds of South Louisiana (that would be somewhere around Houma) where mosquitoes are big enough to carry off small children and there are only two seasons: hot and hotter. With a BA in History, she figured there were enough fry cooks in the world and decided to try her hand at writing. For eight years she played at writing, but in 2008, she decided to get serious and began down the rocky road to publication.

Okay, admit it girl.  You like the alpha male.  And while Gerard Butler is, ah, taken, I’m sure there’s one out there for you.  What’s the draw?

I beg to differ, Rebecca, Gerard is my man! We have a connection that can’t be denied. I’m so sorry 😉  As for the Alpha male…hm. I think modern women have so much pressure on them to be just as successful, motivated, and powerful as men that the fantasy of a man who’ll make decisions and take the burden off our shoulders (in the name of love) is what draws us. To be honest, I’m not sure I could handle dealing with an Alpha male in real life. I’m too bossy and independent, but if I didn’t have to mess with it every day? Hells yeah, bring on the alpha!

Well, you know, most writers do live in a dream world.  If Gerard is in yours, I guess that’s okay.  So long as we both know that reality is a different story.  So, you will soon have two books in the wild:  RUBY:UNCUT AND ON THE LOOSE and SUCCUBUS IN WAITING.  Tell us what is different about your two heroines.  Do they share any characteristics in common?

Wow, that’s a great question! Ruby is physically tougher than Piper is. She’s an Amazon, after all 😉 Piper, on the other hand, is more open and out-going than Ruby. If they share any characteristics though, it would be their independence and ambition. They know what they want out of life and they’ll risk everything to have it.

I love an independent heroine!  Makes for such sparks when dealing with those alpha-males. How about your heroes?  How do they differ, and yet, why am I going to fall in love with both of them? (Gerard doesn’t mind.  He’s quite the free-thinker).

Again, Gerard needs no other woman when he has me waiting for him 😉 But…there are lots of differences between my heroes. Lucian is a bit wild, untamed, and ambitious. He won’t let anything get in his way (unless it’s Ruby). Connor, even though he’s a werewolf, is more cautious (except where Piper’s concerned), scholarly, and weighs himself down with responsibilities. I loved both of these guys. I don’t think I could choose between them because no matter how they act in the beginning of their relationships, they’re complete marshmallows when it comes to the women they love. And yeah, Connor was based on Gerard 😉

That is SO sweet of you to base your Alpha on Gerard.  I’ll be sure to let him know.  If you could be anyone in the world for just one day (living or dead), who would it be and why?

Mais, what a question! I really don’t know! I keep flipping through women and men of great historical significance and then I keep remembering how they died because with my luck, the one day I became them would be the day they kicked the bucket. Hm. Okay, I’d be Gerard Butler *laugh* because then I could lead him right where I want him – like to my bedroom 😉 *snickers*

Okay…I can’t think of a response to that one.  🙂  If you could’ve written any book out there (except yours or mine) what book would it have been and why?

Gah, another one! You’re killing me, Smalls! This question makes me flat out giddy to even think about. Any book…wow. Okay, it would have to be Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. I had to read this damn book about a million times in high school and college and hated it, but you have to admire Mary Shelley. She was a very young woman (18) when she wrote this book and she managed to turn out a story that has survived over a century. This book has helped spawn movies, songs, games, and even more books. How could you not want to have that kind of influence on the world? And yes, I’m terribly jealous that she wrote this book at an age when I was more concerned about the drummers I was in band with in college. *cough*

With me it was the bass guitarist.  Always the bass guitarist.  Good choice with Mary Shelley!  I wonder what she dreamt about at night?  So, my friend, what can readers expect next from you?

My next book, Lifestyles of the Fey and Dangerous will be released by Siren in April. I’m really looking forward to that release. It’s about Noelani “Lani” Fayard and Malachi Cromwell – if you’ve read the other books, you’ll recognize Malachi 😉 That book is so different from the first two in the series; slightly darker, although I still have a good bit of humor in the story. It was a therapeutic book for me to write, so I hope others will experience the same spiritual release I felt when I wrote The End.

Thank you so much for being here today–this was a lot of fun!  Danica can be found at her website: http://www.danicaavet.com/ where you can link to her blog…which has more delusional dreams about Gerard Butler.

Here is a blurb for the awesome Succubus-in-Waiting:

It isn’t easy holding onto your virginity in a succubus Pleasure House, but Piper Foxgrove has managed for decades. As a rare succubus/weretiger, Piper dreams of true love to the consternation of her mother. Forced to work with a bad-tempered, good-looking werewolf looking for his nephew, she’s determined to ignore his sexiness. Unfortunately, her succubus half decides he’s the key to unlocking her powers, while her recently awakened weretiger half thinks he’s perfect mate material.

Connor Griffin needs to find his nephew. The Veil can be dangerous and worry makes him take drastic measures. His brother died because of one of the “soul suckering” succubi so he doesn’t trust them. But something about Piper calls to his wolf and has him doing things he never thought he’d do: like work with a succubus, or lust after a succubus, or fall in love with a sassy, sexy succubus with tiger-striped hair.

And…the fabulous Danica has offered to give away a handpainted Mardi Gras mask made especially for Piper’s book to one lucky commenter!  We’ll randomly draw a name in a couple of days.  Good luck!  If you’d like a question to answer…if you could be anyone in the world for just one day, living or dead, who would it be?
